How colds are spread
Depending on virus type, colds are most commonly spread by:
- Touching infected surfaces then touching your eyes or nose
- Inhaling large particles of infected respiratory secretions
The most common cold virus is the rhinovirus which is spread most often through nasal secretions. Rhinoviruses can survive up to three hours outside the nasal passage. A person infected with a cold is most likely to spread the virus in the second to fourth day of infection. While there is no cure for the common cold, there are easy ways to treat and prevent colds from spreading. Most colds last about a week; some may last longer, especially with children and the elderly. Adults get an average of 2 - 4 colds a year; children, an average of 6 -12. Colds are highly contagious and account for more doctor visits than any other condition in the U.S.
